수원화성 안에는 화려한 관광지보다 더 오래 기억에 남는 공간이 있습니다.
바로 용연입니다.
비가 내리던 오전, 젖은 산책길을 따라 천천히 걸었습니다.
빗방울이 연못 위로 떨어지고, 물결은 조용히 퍼져나갔습니다.
맑은 날보다 사람은 적었지만 오히려 그래서 더 용연의 분위기를 깊게 느낄 수 있었습니다.
용연은 수원화성 동북쪽 방화수류정 아래에 위치한 인공 연못입니다.
정조대왕이 수원화성을 축조하던 시기 함께 조성된 공간으로 알려져 있으며, 단순한 조경용 연못이 아니라 군사적 기능과 풍경적 아름다움을 함께 고려한 공간이라는 특징이 있습니다.
연못 주변으로는 버드나무와 산책길, 성곽이 이어져 있습니다.
특히 비 오는 날에는 젖은 돌길과 흐린 하늘, 물에 비친 성곽의 반영이 어우러지며 수원화성 특유의 차분한 분위기를 만들어 줍니다.
용연의 가장 큰 매력은 ‘천천히 걷게 만든다’는 점입니다.
빠르게 지나가는 관광지라기보다 잠시 멈춰 풍경을 바라보게 만드는 공간에 가깝습니다.
연못 중앙의 작은 섬과 주변 나무들은 계절마다 전혀 다른 분위기를 보여줍니다.
봄에는 연둣빛 버드나무가 아름답고, 여름에는 짙은 녹음이 연못을 감싸며, 비 오는 날에는 물안개 같은 고요함이 공간 전체를 덮습니다.
용연 주변은 산책 코스로도 유명합니다.
방화수류정과 자연스럽게 이어지고 화홍문, 장안문까지 도보 이동이 가능합니다.
조용히 걸으며 사진을 찍기에도 좋은 장소입니다.
이번에 직접 걸어보며 가장 인상 깊었던 것은 빗소리였습니다.
사람들의 소음보다 빗방울 소리가 더 크게 들리는 순간,
도시 속 공간인데도 마치 시간이 천천히 흐르는 느낌이 들었습니다.
수원화성의 웅장함이 ‘성곽’에 있다면,

Rainy Yongyeon, A Quiet Pond Inside Suwon Hwaseong
Inside Suwon Hwaseong Fortress, there is a place that feels calmer and quieter than the busy tourist spots.
That place is Yongyeon Pond.
On a rainy morning, I slowly walked along the wet pathway beside the pond.
Raindrops fell onto the water, creating gentle ripples that spread quietly across the surface.
Yongyeon is an artificial pond located below Banghwasuryujeong Pavilion on the northeastern side of Suwon Hwaseong Fortress.
It was created during the construction of the fortress under King Jeongjo and designed not only for beauty, but also as part of the fortress landscape and defensive structure.
The pond is surrounded by willow trees, walking paths, and fortress walls.
On rainy days, the reflections on the water and the soft gray sky create an especially peaceful atmosphere.
What makes Yongyeon memorable is not excitement, but stillness.
It is a place that naturally slows your footsteps and makes you pause for a moment.
The small island in the middle of the pond changes beautifully with each season.
Fresh green willows in spring, deep summer colors, and quiet rainy landscapes each create a different mood.
Walking around Yongyeon, I could hear the sound of rain more clearly than the sounds of the city.
For a brief moment, time itself seemed to slow down.
If the fortress walls represent the grandeur of Suwon Hwaseong,
then Yongyeon represents its quiet and peaceful side.
A place to breathe slowly,
even in the middle of a busy day.
