현충공원 입구에 들어서면 먼저 울창한 소나무 숲이 방문객을 맞이한다. 도심 한가운데 있다는 사실이 믿기지 않을 만큼 고요하다. 바람은 나무 사이를 지나며 작은 소리를 만들고, 숲길은 천천히 걸음을 늦추게 한다.

공원 곳곳에는 한국전쟁과 독립운동의 역사를 소개하는 전시판이 설치되어 있다. 1950년 6월 25일 전쟁의 참상, 나라를 위해 목숨을 바친 호국영웅들의 이야기, 그리고 자유를 지키기 위한 수많은 선택들이 기록되어 있다.
우리는 교과서에서 전쟁을 배운다.

그래서 현충공원은 슬픔의 공간이 아니다.
감사의 공간이다.
